ICAR's Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA), Bhubaneswar, held a workshop on genetically improved quality fish seed at Ramsagar in Bankura, a major carp seed production hub in West Bengal, with the state Department of Fisheries under the PMMSY national breeding programme, on 25 September.

Bengali-language extension leaflets were released on the improved Jayanti rohu, CIFA-Amrit catla and the CIFABROOD carp broodstock diet. Experts also presented the opportunity to farm CIFA-GI Scampi prawn in West Bengal and discussed biosecurity, inbreeding and adoption of improved technologies with farmers, hatchery owners and fisheries officials.

CIFA director P. K. Sahoo urged the use of institute technologies and scientific practices, particularly fish disease management. Atanu Nandi, secretary of the local fish seed producers' co-operative, urged members to adopt scientific seed production to supply quality seed, including improved varieties, across India, and Bankura assistant fisheries director Kiran Lal Das called for wider use of improved varieties.
