Eighteen tonnes of hilsa were exported to India through Benapole port on Thursday night. The first consignment, of 4 tonnes, had gone to India on Wednesday night.
The 18-tonne shipment, sent for Durga Puja, reached Benapole port on four Bangladeshi trucks. Customs and quality control officials of the Department of Fisheries at Benapole tested samples of the fish before granting permission to export.
The Bangladeshi exporters were Omi Enterprise with 6 tonnes, Lucky Enterprise with 6 tonnes and Riad Enterprise with 6 tonnes. The importers were JK International and Siddheswari Enterprise of Kolkata, India.
The hilsa weigh between 1 kg and 1.5 kg each and are being exported to India at $10 a kg.

Md Ashwadul Haque, quality control officer of the Department of Fisheries at Benapole, said the remaining hilsa consignments began going through Benapole port on Thursday night for Durga Puja in India. Each fish weighs one to one and a half kilograms, he said, and the deadline for hilsa exports has been extended to 5 November.
Abdul Rashid Mia, joint commissioner of Benapole Customs, said exports of the remaining hilsa consignments to India through Benapole port started on Thursday. Field-level officials have been instructed to speed up the export process, he said.
