A "king hilsa" caught in fishermen's nets in the Meghna river at Kamalnagar in Lakshmipur has been sold for Tk 10,500. The fish weighed 2 kg 300 g.

It was sold at Saru Mia's wholesale depot at the Matirhat fish landing in the upazila around midday on Monday, 3 August. Fish trader Md Riaz Bepari bought it with the highest bid at auction.

Md Khokon, a wholesaler at the Matirhat landing, said the large hilsa was caught in the net of local fisherman Monu Majhi, who then brought it to Saru Mia's depot, where Riaz bought it with the top bid.

The buyer, Md Riaz Bepari, said big hilsa are rarely caught now and fetch high prices in the market, which is why he joined the auction. He said the fish would be sent to Chandpur, where prices are higher, and he hoped to sell it for about Tk 15,000.

Kamalnagar upazila senior fisheries officer Turja Saha said the amount of hilsa in the river was relatively low and most of the fish being caught weighed 300 to 500 grams, so demand and prices for large hilsa were both high. He said hilsa production in the river was likely to rise further next month.
