As with the sea and rivers, the government is banning fishing in the haors for a set period each year. It is set to declare a one-month ban on fishing in the haors from 29 May to 28 June (15 Jyoishtho to 14 Asharh) every year.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock published a notification of the proposal on 25 March.
Amendment to the rules
Using powers under the Protection and Conservation of Fish Act, 1950, the government is amending the Protection and Conservation of Fish Rules, 1985 to ban fishing in the haors, adding a new rule.
The draft proposal says fishing will be banned every year from 29 May to 28 June in the haors of Kishoreganj, Netrokona, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Moulvibazar.
Objections invited
The notification asks anyone with objections or suggestions about the amendment to send them to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock within 60 days of its publication in the gazette. The government will consider them if necessary.
If no objections or suggestions are received within that time, the amendment will be deemed final.
