A child has died in a fierce monkey attack in India. The incident took place on Tuesday, 14 November, in Salki village of Gandhinagar in Gujarat.

Forest officials said the attack happened near a temple in Dehgam taluka.

Police named the child as Dipak Thakor. He was taken to hospital straight after the incident but died before treatment could begin.

According to police and forest officials, the child was playing with his friends when a group of monkeys attacked him. His body was badly lacerated by the monkeys' claws.

One official said the attack had torn the child's intestines. When he was taken to hospital, doctors declared him dead.

The official said this was the third monkey attack in the village within a week. Forest officer Bishal Chowdhury said his office was trying to catch the monkeys in the village.
