Six fishers have been detained in Gosairhat, Shariatpur, for catching hilsa in defiance of the ban. A mobile court also seized 40,000 metres of current net.

The upazila administration and fisheries department carried out the drive at various points on the Meghna river in the upazila from 2pm to 7pm on Tuesday, 22 October.

According to the upazila administration and fisheries department, the drive to protect mother hilsa began in the afternoon. Six fishers were detained while fishing in defiance of the ban, and 40,000 metres of current net, worth an estimated Tk 8 lakh, were seized. A small engine-driven boat was also seized.

District Superintendent of Police Nazrul Islam, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ahmed Sabbir Sajjad, the officer-in-charge of Gosairhat police station and other police members took part in the drive.

Gosairhat upazila fisheries officer Abul Kashem said six fishers had been detained for catching hilsa in defiance of the ban, and that the drive to protect mother hilsa would continue.
