A mobile court has fined two people Tk 60,000 for collecting excess toll (hasil) at a sacrificial animal market in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha.

Upazila executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land) SM Abdullah Bin Shafiq imposed the fines during a drive at the market in Mahimaganj in the upazila on the evening of Saturday, 24 June.

According to mobile court sources, Mahimaganj market has no lawful lessee, so this year it was being run under government management through direct (khas) collection. But a group posing as lessees had long been illegally collecting excess toll. On learning of this, the upazila administration raided the market on Saturday afternoon. Two people were caught red-handed collecting three times the government-set rate. A mobile court was then held, and one was fined Tk 40,000 and the other Tk 20,000.

Confirming the matter, executive magistrate Abdullah Bin Shafiq told Jagonews24 that such drives will continue in the public interest.
