Joint forces have arrested four people with two firearms on the Padma at Goalanda in Rajbari during the drive to protect mother hilsa.

They are Jibonto Munshi (20), Nazir Uddin Sheikh (19), Rashid Sardar (55) and Khairul Molla (23).

Rajbari additional superintendent of police Sharif Al Rajib confirmed the arrests at around 7.45pm on Friday.

He said the joint forces were working on the mother hilsa conservation drive on the Padma. At around 4.30pm they raided an engine-driven trawler heading from Antarer Mor to Rakhalgachhi char in Debgram, in the middle of the Padma opposite Daulatdia launch ghat, and detained the four people on board. Acting on information they gave, a foreign pistol and a single-barrel gun were recovered from a black school bag. Legal proceedings are under way.
