A fisherman in Sarankhola, Bagerhat, has netted a koral (barramundi) weighing 20 kg. The fish was caught on Monday morning, 28 September, in the Bhola river inside the Sundarbans and later sold at Sarankhola market for Tk 36,000.

Jahurul Pahlan of Sarankhola village had gone fishing in the Bhola river with Forest Department permission. Soon after casting his net he felt an unusual pull, and hauled up the large koral. Around 10 am local wholesaler Shahadat Munshi bought it, a price of Tk 1,800 a kilo.

Traders said it is the biggest koral caught by Sundarbans fishers in the month since the three-month fishing ban ended. Shahadat Munshi said large koral are in high demand, so it fetched a good price.

Md Khalilur Rahman, assistant range officer of the Sarankhola range of the eastern Sundarbans, said the three-month ban had given fish the chance to grow, so fishers are now landing larger fish in nets and on lines, to the benefit of fishers and traders alike.
