An endangered gharial has been caught in a fisherman's net in the Jamuna river in Belkuchi upazila of Sirajganj. The gharial was caught in the net of Ismail Hossain of Bardhul Bilmohisha village in the upazila at around 8pm on Sunday (1 November). On Monday morning (2 November), curious crowds gathered to see it after hearing the news.
Belkuchi upazila assistant education officer Sujabat Ali said the gharial was first kept in a pond in the area and was later released into the Jamuna.
Released into the river
Mamun Biswas, chairman of the environmental organisation The Bird Safety House, said the gharial was caught in Ismail Hossain's net in Bardhul Bilmohisha village of Belkuchi upazila on Sunday night. On Monday morning, Rajshahi divisional wildlife inspector Jahangir Kabir was informed. Following their advice, the gharial was rescued from Ismail of Bilmohisha village with the help of Belkuchi upazila forest officer Shahidul Islam and local people. After the rescue, samples were taken from the gharial, and at noon it was released into the Jamuna at Bilmohisha with the help of locals.
He added that fishermen in the Jamuna's char areas need to be made aware of wildlife. A gharial was caught at Chauhali last Friday, and last year another was caught in the Jamuna in the area west of Nowhata, he said.
