The last giraffe at Gazipur Safari Park has died. It died under treatment on the evening of Thursday (October 23), leaving the park with no giraffes.
The park's officer-in-charge, Tarek Rahman, said the safari park's last giraffe had long been suffering from TB. A six-member medical board was formed to treat it, but it died inside the park on October 23. After a post-mortem, the giraffe was buried inside the park.
The park authorities said a general diary had been filed with Sreepur police station in Gazipur over the death. The officer-in-charge (OC) of Sreepur police station, Mohammad Abdul Barik, said legal action would be taken after an investigation.
Sixteen giraffes over the years
According to the safari park authorities, a total of 12 giraffes were brought from South Africa in 2013 and 2015 for visitors' entertainment. Four more giraffes were later born. Of these, a total of 14 giraffes died, including one in July 2018 and several that fell ill in July 2019. After that, two female giraffes were left. One died last year, and the last one died on October 23.
