A yam (mete alu) of astonishing shape has been found in Kaliarchhara village of Shantiram union in Gaibandha's Sundarganj upazila. Its form looks much like human hands and feet, and it has stirred curiosity among local people.

The yam was dug up from the yard of farmer Saddam Mia's house in Kaliarchhara village on the afternoon of Sunday, 1 March. The oddly shaped yam weighs about 20 kg.

It was so large and so unusually formed that he was stunned at first sight. He told his family and neighbours, and it then spread on social media.

Local people say some parts of the yam look like human fingers, while others closely resemble the shape of a foot. Because of this unusual form, many consider it a rare creation of nature.

Contacted to confirm the report, Saddam Mia said: "My family and I are very happy, and a little amazed, to have found this unusual yam. I never imagined that something like this could be in the soil of our yard. I was frightened at first when I saw its shape. After everyone came to see it, I understood it really is a kind of wonder of nature."

Sundarganj upazila agriculture officer Rashidul Islam Kabir said: "Soil structure, moisture and a long period of growth may have caused the yam's abnormal growth and change of shape, because this kind of yam does not have a fixed size."
