About 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year, most of it ending up in landfill, where it ultimately contributes to climate change.
Food waste is "the biggest challenge facing humanity right now," says New York chef Max La Manna. He has written a book called "More Plants, Less Waste", in which he explains how anyone can help change the situation.
Food is the most essential element of life. "Because my father was a chef, I grew up more or less in the world of food. My parents always taught me not to waste food," Mr La Manna says.
Waste at every level
"In a world of nine billion people, we face food insecurity at almost every level, and more than 820 million people do not have enough to eat."
Today the food crisis is humanity's biggest problem: an estimated one-third of the food produced in the world is lost, spoiled or wasted.
Food waste is not just a waste of food. It means wasted money, water, energy, land and transport.
Even the food you throw away can play a harmful role in climate change. Discarded food ends up in landfill, where it rots and produces methane gas. If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases after the United States and China.
