Two thousand five hundred chicks, 12 days old, have died at a poultry farm in Feni.

It happened on the afternoon of Friday 30 December at Yusuf Poultry Farm in Char Ganesh village in Sonagazi municipality. Poultry doctors could not say what killed the chicks.

The farm's owner, Md Yusuf, said: "I took a loan of Tk 3 lakh from NCC Bank and started rearing broilers on a rented farm. Twelve days ago I bought broiler chicks from a hatchery and brought them to the farm. Even though there was enough light and air and a good environment, the chicks suddenly died. Now I do not know how I will repay the loan."

The Sonagazi upazila livestock office has no specialist poultry doctor. So the owner took the dead chicks for a post-mortem to Dr Hari Kamal Majumder, described in the report as the Chhagalnaiya upazila water resources officer. He too could not confirm the cause of death after examining them.

Sonagazi upazila livestock officer Dr Supan Nandi said: "I am a dairy farm specialist. I told the farm owner to seek the advice of poultry specialist Hari Kamal Majumder."
