A mobile court has jailed 22 fishermen after a drive on the Padma river in Sadarpur upazila, Faridpur, for defying the ban on catching mother hilsa.

The drive ran from dawn into the morning of Wednesday 15 October. Zakia Sultana, the Sadarpur upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and executive magistrate, confirmed the information.

She said 22 fishermen were each sentenced to 15 days' simple imprisonment under the Fish Protection and Conservation Act for catching mother hilsa in breach of the ban. In addition, 50,000 metres of current net were burned and 20 kg of hilsa seized. The hilsa was later distributed to the Purba Shyampur madrasa and the Dashhajar madrasa.
