New Market police in the capital have arrested two men accused of fraud in the name of selling hilsa on Facebook.
Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's media and public relations division, gave the information on Friday 8 August. Those arrested are Md Sifat Molla, 25, and Md Masum Beg, 25.
How the buyer was cheated
Citing New Market police station, Talebur Rahman said a man saw an attractive hilsa advertisement on a Facebook page called "Chandpur Ilish Ghat" at about 10.30am on 5 July. He contacted the accused through the WhatsApp number given on the page, and in the course of that contact he sent money through a mobile banking app to various numbers the fraudsters gave him to buy hilsa. In this way the fraudsters took Tk 2 lakh from him. The victim filed a case at New Market police station.
The DMP deputy commissioner said that, with intelligence gathered during the investigation and the help of technology, police first arrested Md Sifat Molla at Ratanganj Bazar under Narail Sadar police station at 7.30pm on Wednesday 6 August, and then Md Masum Beg in the Kalia police station area at 5.15am the next day, Thursday 7 August.
Four mobile phones and a SIM card used in the fraud were seized from them. The officer said the process of taking legal action against the arrested men is under way.
