The forest department has recovered the carcass of a male wild elephant from beside Katabari forest in Nalitabari, Sherpur.

The carcass was recovered at around 9.30am on Saturday, 5 July, said Dewan Ali, range officer of Madhutila Eco Park under the Mymensingh forest division.

According to the forest department and local people, a herd of 8-10 wild elephants came from the Nakugaon area to the North Katabari area on the night of Friday, 4 July. To protect their homes and crops from wild elephants, local farmers had earlier connected electricity from generators and kept electric lights burning; frightened by the light, the herds come into paddy fields and settlements less often. The forest department believes the elephant died at some point during the night after becoming tangled in an electric wire.

Range officer Dewan Ali said the elephant was about 15-16 years old. Senior authorities have been informed, a post-mortem will be carried out on the elephant, and legal action will also be taken, he said.
