More than 94.43 lakh animals were sold for sacrifice at cattle markets and on online platforms for Eid ul-Adha. Of these, 43.61 lakh were cattle and buffalo and 50.81 lakh were goats, sheep and other animals. According to the Department of Livestock Services, sacrificial animals worth more than Tk 60,000 crore were sold this year.
Md Iftekhar Hossain, public relations officer of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, gave the information to Jagonews24 on Thursday night (29 June).
He said the total number of animals sold cannot be used to determine the number sacrificed, because this year's total will be set by adding household-reared animals that were sacrificed to those sold. The Department of Livestock Services is working on the total number of sacrificed animals.
Markets and online sales
There were 3,249 sacrificial animal markets across the country, including those in Dhaka's two city corporations. The 43.61 lakh cattle and buffalo sold for more than Tk 47,000 crore, and the 50.81 lakh goats, sheep and other animals for more than Tk 13,000 crore. According to the department's figures, total sales exceeded Tk 60,000 crore.
According to the department's control room, sacrificial animals were sold through online platforms in all eight divisions this year. In total, 463,096 animals were sold online. Chattogram division sold the most cattle, 84,000, and Dhaka the most goats and sheep, 21,902.
The 463,096 animals sold on online haats fetched Tk 4,231 crore 58 lakh 98 thousand. Photos with prices of 381,420 cattle and 84,054 goats and sheep were uploaded to the same platform, from which buyers chose the animals they wanted.
Veterinary care at the markets
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock also arranged on-the-spot treatment for animals at the markets. At markets in Dhaka's two city corporations, 7,098 animals were treated: 5,709 cattle and 1,389 goats and sheep.
At other markets in the eight divisions, 130,162 animals were treated: 60,393 cattle and 69,769 goats and sheep. In total, 137,260 animals were treated at the sacrificial animal markets.
