Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will give all-round support to any individual or organisation that takes up greening anywhere in Dhaka, DNCC administrator Mohammad Ejaz has said.

He said this on Thursday 14 August at the opening of a tree-planting programme in Banani marking "July Punorjagoron" and "Tarunyer Utsab 2025".

Speaking as chief guest, the administrator said work has already begun to conserve fields, parks and wetlands to make Dhaka a climate-resilient city. Work is under way to protect about five acres of field and wetland at Hajipara, and awareness boards have been put up to protect water-centred parks and fields in line with the DAP map.

To expand rooftop gardening, he said, the corporation has published a booklet on managing rooftop gardens and is planning to encourage city dwellers further.

The planting programme, supported by IDLC Finance PLC, was held at the 55 Kadamtala Adda Park beside the lake on Road 20/K in Banani. Green Savers, Banani Society, Kadamtala Sangathan and other environmental and social organisations took part.

The administrator also said a target has been set to plant five lakh trees this monsoon to protect Dhaka's environmental balance, reduce air pollution and safeguard public health. The Banani lakeside work will help reach that target.

The programme planted 500 saplings of various native species: 55 hijal, 45 lemon, 30 rajanigandha, 30 beli, 35 gandharaj, 40 joba, 45 amloki, 10 bel, 30 jui, 40 bohera, 5 horitoki, 5 champa, 5 agar, 50 golap jam, 35 ashfol and 40 alu bokhara.

Present were IDLC group chief financial officer Masud Karim Majumder, CSR lead Farhana Sharmin, Banani Society president Shawkat Ali Bhuiyan Dilon, general secretary Nurul Islam Molla, Green Savers chief executive Ahsan Rony, photographer Mahmudur Rahman and representatives of the organisations and institutions involved.
