Rows of red water lilies (shapla) are in bloom in a roadside pond beside Chhoto Maheshpur village on the Birampur-Nawabganj road in Dinajpur, and passers-by are stopping to look. An ordinary pond has become an attractive spot thanks to the village's young people.

According to local sources, about three years ago a few young men built a bamboo seating platform over the pond and then planted red water lily seedlings to make it prettier. With regular care the lilies gradually spread across the whole pond.

The organisers say rainwater in the monsoon and irrigation water from the surrounding Iri-Boro paddy fields in the dry season keep the pond full, so the red lilies can be seen at different times of the year.

"You rarely see such a mass of water lilies beside a busy road," said passer-by Majedul Islam Sagar. "This unusual idea of the village youths deserves real praise."

Kept alive by run-off from the paddy fields, the small pond shows how a roadside ditch can become a place of flowers and rest with a little care. Agricare24 carried the report from the Dainik Gramer Kagoj.
