Hilsa is selling at Tk 400 to Tk 2,200 a kg in Dinajpur, a visit to the town's Bahadur Bazar on Thursday, 3 October, found.

Traders had laid out hilsa in baskets at the fish stalls, selling them at Tk 400 to Tk 2,200 a kg by size. Jatka sells at Tk 400 a kg; hilsa of 250 grams at Tk 600 a kg; 500-gram fish at Tk 1,000; 750 to 800-gram fish at Tk 1,500; 900-gram fish at Tk 1,700; one-kilogram fish at Tk 1,800 to 1,900; fish of 1.1 to 1.2 kg at Tk 2,000; and fish of 1.3 to 1.4 kg at Tk 2,200 a kg. No hilsa of one and a half kilograms or more could be found anywhere in the market.

Atiur Rahman, a fish trader at Bahadur Bazar, said there is fish in the market and the prices are there too, but sales are low.

Chan Mia, a hilsa seller from Phulbari upazila, said that although it is hilsa season, few fish are being caught at sea, so less hilsa is reaching the market than demand. "Hilsa comes from Barishal and Chandpur. We sell it on a limited profit," he said.

A buyer named Rubel Sarkar said: "The price is high, but I am buying because I have to. The family must have hilsa at least once a year. Besides, the children at home want it after seeing hilsa on the TV news."
