Locals have rescued a 12-foot python in Burichang, Cumilla. The python was found under a culvert in Bakshimul union, which borders India, at Mirpur in the upazila on Wednesday night (27 August). Local youth Alauddin then put the snake in a sack and took it to his home.

Locals said villagers panicked when they saw the huge python under the culvert, until Alauddin bravely caught it. Many people are advising him to sell the snake.

Retired army member Rafiqul Islam said the python is about 12 feet long. It is probably the python that forest officials released in the border area about a year ago, carried here by water, he said. "I want the snake to be released back into the forest," he said.

Iyajul, beat officer of the Kalikrishnanagar beat of the Burichang upazila forest department, said he learned about the python during the night and the snake was recovered in the morning. It will be released soon, he said.
