Not greens, vegetables, fish or pots and pans: in Patuakhali town, it is now chicks being sold door to door. Broiler and layer chicks are carried in boxes on the head and sold on the street.

On Saturday morning (13 February), Ya Ahmed, 30, was seen hawking chicks on College Road in the town.

He said he had come from Brahmanbaria to Patuakhali town to sell chicks, charging Tk 20 each for broiler chicks and Tk 15 each for layer chicks.

Patuakhali District Livestock Officer Anwar Hossain said: "These chicks are of poor quality. They do not grow the way they normally should. For rearing, chicks should be bought from a good-quality hatchery."
