A mobile court has fined four fishermen for catching hilsa in the Jamuna in Chauhali upazila, Sirajganj, in breach of the ban. One and a half lakh metres of net and hilsa were seized.

They were detained on Monday afternoon (13 October) in a drive at Bridashuria, Poyla, Dattakandi, Umarpur and Fulhara on the Jamuna in the upazila.

Those detained were Zakir Mollah, 55, Momin Mollah, 22, and Yamin, 20, of Umarpur village in the same upazila, and Shahabuddin, 45, of Dakshin Jotpara village. The mobile court collected fines totalling Tk 30,000 from them.

Upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Mostafizur Rahman conducted the mobile court. He told Jago News that four people were detained that day in a drive against hilsa fishing in the Jamuna in breach of the ban. Each fisherman was fined Tk 7,500 and then released. The one and a half lakh metres of net were burned and the seized hilsa distributed among the local poor.

Upazila fisheries officer Tanvir Hasan Majumder, river police and Ansar members were present during the drive.
