Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain has said everyone must come forward to build a green environment, and that there is no alternative to tree planting to protect it. To keep the city's environment in balance, tackle the effects of climate change and build a healthy, beautiful city for the next generation, everyone must start planting trees now, he said.
He spoke on 11 September at an event in front of the CCC office, where the Lions Club of Chittagong handed over 1,000 tree saplings to him.
Trees against pollution
"Trees are our greatest friends," the mayor said. "Through photosynthesis they give oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, making our survival possible. From an Islamic point of view, too, planting trees is a virtuous deed: as long as the tree lives, reward is recorded for the one who planted it. Bangladesh was once full of forests and green trees, but unchecked encroachment, the stripping of hills and the destruction of forests have reduced the green cover. So everyone must take part in tree planting of their own accord."
He added that Chattogram is a densely populated city where pollution is rising all the time, and trees are the greatest defence against it. The city corporation has taken up tree-planting programmes in various parts of the city, but government efforts alone are not enough; individuals and social and voluntary organisations must also be involved.
He thanked the Lions Club of Chittagong for the initiative and called on city residents to plant at least one tree each where they live.
