A factory at Bahaddarhat in Chattogram city was making ghee without a trace of milk, mixing palm oil, harmful chemicals and artificial colouring. After a raid by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection at midday on Sunday, 4 October, the business, M R Consumers Products, was fined Tk 200,000.
The raid was led by Foyez Ullah, the directorate's deputy director in Chattogram. Ghee should be made from milk cream or butter, he said, but there was no milk at the factory at all. Fake ghee was being made from palm oil, artificial flavour and harmful chemical dyes in dirty, unhygienic conditions and sold on the market.
The owner admitted the offence and was fined on the spot, he said. The fake ghee and the harmful ingredients found at the factory were seized and destroyed there.
In the same drive an egg shop and an LPG seller were fined Tk 10,000 each for not displaying price lists or keeping sales receipts, and a fruit shop was fined Tk 1,000.
The directorate said such monitoring drives would continue in the public interest.
