The road medians from the airport to Mohra in Chattogram are being decorated with many species of flowering trees, Chattogram City Corporation mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain has said.

The mayor inspected the tree-planting work on the Agrabad to Lalkhan Bazar road on Wednesday, 29 July. Forest and slum development officer Moinul Hossain Ali Joy briefed him on the progress of the overall greening programme.

Shahadat Hossain said: "Our prime minister has announced the planting of 25 crore trees in five years. It is a far-sighted and timely initiative. If every citizen of the country comes forward to plant and care for trees, it will be possible to build a green, clean and environment-friendly Bangladesh."

In line with that goal, 10 lakh trees are being planted in the city by Chattogram City Corporation with the help of various social organisations to restore the environmental balance. All the medians from Mohra to the airport will be filled with flowers and greenery, and besides beautifying the roads, trees will be planted widely on vacant land, in parks and in open spaces across the city.

The airport road has already been coloured with various flowers. On the median between Dewanhat and Barik Building, 6,500 saplings of 26 species are being planted, among them jarul, sonalu, radhachura, kamini, kanchan, hasnahena, gandharaj and shiuli, including about 10 near-extinct native species. Croton and other ornamental plants are being planted from Tiger Pass to Lalkhan Bazar. Arrangements are also being made to maintain the plants, including daily watering and weeding.
