After succeeding with fish farming in floating cages, Sohel Miaji of Puran Bazar in Chandpur has begun to find success rearing turkeys. He has set up a turkey farm on fallow land in the yard of his own home.
Sohel is the son of Taiyab Ali Miaji of Purba Sriramdi, Puran Bazar. In 2015 he won a national award as a small entrepreneur from Citi Foundation for farming fish in floating cages on the Dakatia river.
From 17 birds to more than 500
In January this year he bought two turkeys from Ghorashal in Narsingdi for Tk 20,000, and in February 15 chicks for Tk 18,000, 17 birds in all. He also built a farm shed for Tk 1.5 lakh.
He started with a total investment of Tk 2 lakh. In just seven months his farm now has more than 500 turkeys of all sizes, with a current market value of over Tk 4 lakh. Each large turkey sells for Tk 2,500 and a two-and-a-half-month-old bird for Tk 1,700.
Sohel looks after the birds himself, with help from his father. He says turkey farming can more than double your money, so unemployed young people, instead of sitting idle, can raise turkeys on fallow land at home.
Sohel explained that chicks are hatched using a machine called an incubator, which takes 300 eggs at a time; chicks hatch in 28 to 30 days. His farm produces 30 to 35 eggs a week, and he hatches all of them.
Sohel believes that with government support he could turn his farm into a model for turkey farms across the country.
