The National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate seized 350 kg of rotten hilsa from a trawler that had come from Monpura in Bhola, next to the Chandpur bus station wholesale fish market. The drive was carried out on the afternoon of 29 October with the help of the Bangladesh Army.

It was led by Mohammad Abdullah Al Imran, assistant director of the directorate's Chandpur office. He said several trawlers were searched and a large quantity of rotten hilsa was found on one of them. The seized fish was later destroyed by burying it in the ground.

He said the trawler's owner, Helal Khan, was fined Tk 1 lakh in cash for keeping rotten hilsa. The fine was paid on his behalf by fish trader Mostafa Mal. All the traders were also given a verbal warning.

A day earlier, on Tuesday, the directorate had seized a large amount of rotten hilsa in a separate drive in the same area, where one trader was fined Tk 6,000.

Fisheries officer Farhana Akter Ruma, leaders of the Chandpur fish traders' association and members of the army were present during the drive.
