"Hilsa is a sea fish that comes into fresh water to spawn, so it must be given the chance to spawn during the breeding season. We all have to work together to protect hilsa, a national resource. Then we will be able to meet the country's demand and export hilsa abroad."

Syed Moshfiqur Rahman, the newly appointed superintendent of police (SP), said this on Tuesday afternoon (8 October) at the district office of the river police Chandpur region, at the BIWTA intersection in the town.

Speaking at a meeting with journalists, he said the police's work would not be the same as before. Almost everyone now in charge in the region is new, and they want to review all past activities and work in a new way. Efforts to keep the waterways safe overall would continue, he said.

He said the task force drive to protect mother hilsa, involving the district administration, district police, Coast Guard, fisheries department and army, would continue. "We will take various steps so that hilsa can spawn safely for 22 days, from 13 October to 3 November," he said.

The meeting was moderated by Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Imtiaz Ahmed. Chandpur Press Club President Shahadat Hossain Shanto and Chandpur River Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Hanif were among those who spoke.
