Police have arrested four members of a ring that had long been defrauding people online by selling hilsa and other goods in Chandpur's name.

They were arrested in a raid in Kalia upazila of Narail on Tuesday, 8 September. Ten mobile phones, 46 SIM cards, two of them Indian, and Tk 75,000 in cash were seized from them.

Those arrested are Furkan Sheikh, Chandu Sheikh, Ratul Hossain Nobel and Shahidul Sheikh, all of Kalia.

The Chandpur police Detective Branch (DB) said the ring collected photos and videos from Facebook, edited them and opened fake pages and WhatsApp IDs. It then created fake advertisements and reels for hilsa, furniture, shoes, pens, children's toys and online jobs and spread them through boosted posts. Members used SIM cards registered in other people's names to contact buyers.

Additional Superintendent of Police Nadira Noor said two separate cases had been filed at Chandpur Model police station. The suspects' locations were then traced with the help of information technology and they were arrested in a raid in the Kalia area. Including two arrested earlier over the same incident, six people have so far been sent to court.
