A mobile court has jailed five fishermen for catching jatka in breach of the ban in a Meghna river sanctuary area in Chandpur Sadar upazila. Three fishing boats and 5,000 metres of banned current net were seized during the drive.
The mobile court was conducted on Monday afternoon (13 April) by Tanvir Rabbi, assistant commissioner and executive magistrate at the Deputy Commissioner's office, and Bappi Dutta Roni, assistant commissioner (land) of Sadar upazila.
Those sentenced are Hazrat Ali (30), Shuvo Patwari (18), Joynal Uddin (75) and Mesher Uddin (40) of Chandpur Sadar, and Abdul (24) of Matlab Uttar. The court jailed Abdul for 15 days and the other four for seven days each.
Md Mizanur Rahman, assistant fisheries officer of Sadar upazila, who took part in the drive, confirmed the information at night.
Three boats and 5,000 metres of net seized
He said the joint drive was carried out from 12 noon to 5pm on Monday in the Ananda Bazar, Shafarmali, Rajrajeshwar, Mini Cox's Bazar, Char Mukundi and Bahariya areas of the Meghna. The Chandpur district and Sadar upazila administrations, the Coast Guard and the river police took part.
Md Mizanur Rahman said five dishonest fishermen were detained with three boats on the Meghna near Gazir Tek and Char Mukundi in Rajrajeshwar union, and 5,000 metres of current net were seized from them.
The detained fishermen were then brought to the Coast Guard station, where the mobile court was held. Executive magistrate Tanvir Rabbi sentenced four of them to seven days' simple imprisonment and fined each Tk 200. Assistant commissioner (land) Bappi Dutta Roni sentenced the other to 15 days' simple imprisonment. The seized nets were burnt and destroyed, and the three boats have been kept in Coast Guard custody.
