Police in Chandpur have detained 63 fishers in the past 24 hours for catching hilsa in defiance of the ban. Of them, 43 were given sentences of various terms.

From them, 148 kg of hilsa, 5 lakh 53 thousand 900 metres of current net and eight engine-driven fishing boats were seized.

Imtiaz Ahmed, assistant superintendent of police for the Chandpur region, gave the information to the river police media cell on the afternoon of Monday, 21 October.

He said 12 fishing boats were seized in the drives, a figure given alongside the eight boats reported earlier in the same account. Three people were fined Tk 5,000 each, Tk 15,000 in all. Executive magistrates, river police, the Coast Guard and the fisheries department are running separate drives on the river around the clock. To protect mother hilsa, the government has banned all fishing on the river for 22 days, from 13 October to 3 November.
