A 10-foot Burmese python weighing 25 kg has been found in a mango tree at a house in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar.

The Forest Department rescued the snake with the help of local people from a tree at a house in the Napitpara area of Rajapalong union at noon on 16 August.

The information was given by Imdadul Hasan Roni, the Forest Department's Dochhari beat officer.

Eyewitnesses said the python was coiled on a branch of a mango tree at the house of Abdur Rahim in Napitpara, in the Dochhari beat of Ukhiya range. A woman spotted the snake first and screamed, spreading panic in the neighbourhood. Local people then informed the Forest Department, and beat officer Imdadul Hasan Roni reached the scene and arranged for the python to be rescued safely.

Beat officer Imdadul Hasan Roni said: "On getting a call from local people, we quickly went there and rescued the python. It is a Burmese python, weighing about 25 kg and about 10 feet long. The snake is healthy and has been released into natural forest under the supervision of the Forest Department."

Abdul Mannan, officer in charge of Ukhiya range, said: "Pythons like this play an important role in the forest environment and ecosystem. So after rescuing them we usually release them into safe forest. This one was released the same way."
