Some 620 kg of hilsa being illegally smuggled into India has been seized at the Burichang border in Cumilla. The fish was seized on 11 September at the Anandapur border in the upazila.
Lt Col AM Jaber Bin Jabbar, commander of BGB's Sultanpur Battalion, said BGB carried out an anti-smuggling drive in the area at around 1:30pm on a tip-off. The smugglers left 31 boxes on a hillock at North Anandapur in Burichang and fled. The boxes were then searched and 620 kg of hilsa was seized.
Burichang upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Sahida Akter said the fish had been sold at auction and the money deposited in the government treasury.
