The Wildlife and Snake Rescue Team has rescued a monocled cobra about two and a half feet long from a house in Boalkhali, Chattogram, sparing the whole family from the venomous snake.

Members of the team recovered the snake on the afternoon of 11 July from the house of Md Alamgir at Molla Bari in Charkhijirpur village of Boalkhali. It was later released into the forest, said team member Amir Hossain Shaon.

Alamgir said that because of floodwater, his wife had been keeping a hen with her chicks inside the house at night. Around midnight on Friday, he woke to the hen flapping wildly. When he switched on the light he saw the hen fighting a snake with its hood raised, trying to protect her newly hatched chicks. At the sight of the light the snake slid under the bed, but not before it bit the hen, which died shortly afterwards.

Shaon said the team went to Alamgir's house in Charkhijirpur after being informed on Saturday morning. After searching all day, they found the 2.5-foot monocled cobra in a pile of firewood and later released it into the forest.

With water all around, snakes may enter homes, so people must be careful, Shaon said, adding that there is no cause for panic.
