Fishermen in the Meghna river in Bhola have caught a "king hilsa". The fish, weighing 2 kg 70 g, sold for about Tk 6,500.
Around 2pm on Thursday, 19 June, the hilsa was bought at auction for Tk 6,480 at Tulatuli fish ghat in Bhola Sadar upazila by Md Kamal Hossain, an arotdar (commission agent) at the ghat.
How it was caught and sold
Md Kamal Hossain said the fish was caught around midday on Thursday in the net of fisherman Md Tachhir Majhi of Madanpur union in Daulatkhan upazila. It was caught in the Meghna between Dhania in Bhola Sadar and Madanpur union in Daulatkhan, and weighed 2 kg 70 g. Tachhir Majhi brought it to Tulatuli around 2pm. "I then bought the hilsa at the highest price at auction. Several arotdars and fish traders were there, but my bid was higher than theirs," he said.
He said bidding at the ghat started at Tk 1,500 and rose until it closed at Tk 6,480. He claimed he could sell the fish at the Barishal wholesale market for Tk 7,500 to 8,000.
Bhola district fisheries officer Biswajit Kumar Dev said fishermen are now catching big hilsa in the river because past bans were successful and illegal nets were destroyed. He said all future drives would also be carried out successfully, and claimed that even bigger hilsa would then be caught.
