Sacrificial animal markets in Bhairab, Kishoreganj, have come alive, with cattle and goats selling briskly in the final days. Town residents make up most of the crowds, and many are buying the animals they like. This was the scene at the Natal cattle market in Bhairab and at the markets in Bashgari, Mendipur and Gazaria.

At the cattle market next to Natal in Bhairab municipal town on the afternoon of Tuesday, 27 June, buyers were crowding in to choose animals. Bulls, oxen, heifers, buffaloes and goats of various local and foreign breeds, large and small, were on sale.

Local traders and sellers at the market said sales of sacrificial animals had picked up well, and buyers are now choosing animals they like without looking too hard at the price. Cattle and buffaloes in the market range from Tk 1 lakh to Tk 5 lakh, and goats of various breeds from Tk 10,000 to Tk 20,000.

Roman Mia, a farmer from Aganagar village in the upazila, told Jagonews he brought six large cattle to the market. He sold four on Monday and two oxen on Tuesday, one for Tk 1 lakh 70 thousand and the other for Tk 1 lakh 75 thousand.

He said the crowd of buyers had grown in the last days and buyers are now more focused on getting the animal they want for the sacrifice than on bargaining.

Raihan Mia, a businessman from Kalipur, said he buys his sacrificial cow a day or two before Eid every year. "I came to the market today to buy a cow. After a lot of looking around I bought an ox I liked for Tk 1 lakh 75 thousand," he said.
