A man, Rasel Khan, 35, has gone missing after jumping into a river while being chased by police as he returned with hilsa bought despite the ban in Bauphal, Patuakhali.

The incident happened on the Tentulia river on Saturday evening (11 October). Rasel Khan is the son of Yusuf Khan of Tanter Kathi village in Nazirpur union of the upazila.

Kalaiya river police, a Fire Service diving team and local people have been searching the Tentulia since Sunday morning, but he has not yet been found.

River police sources said that on Saturday afternoon Rasel Khan and three others were returning in a boat after buying hilsa. As they entered the Aloki canal in Kalaiya union from the Tentulia, Rasel panicked on seeing a river police patrol speedboat and jumped into the river. Two of the people with him climbed onto a nearby trawler and escaped.

Al Mamun, inspector at Kalaiya river police outpost, said the police were patrolling the Tentulia against fishing in breach of the ban when a man named Rasel jumped into the river on seeing their speedboat. They tried to rescue him and are still searching.
