A fisheries official and three members of the Coast Guard were injured when fishermen attacked a drive to protect mother hilsa on the Meghna in Barishal. Seven of the attackers have been detained.

The incident happened on the afternoon of Tuesday, 7 October, near the Aliganj area of Hijla upazila in Barishal district.

Hijla senior upazila fisheries officer Mohammad Alam confirmed the incident.

The detained fishermen are Jibon Sardar, Abdur Rahim, Miraj Hossain, Saddam, Raihan Patwari, Barkat Ullah and Sujon. All are residents of the Ulania area of Mehendiganj.

Mohammad Alam said the fisheries office and the Coast Guard jointly raided the spot while fish were being caught with illegal nets. The fishermen attacked the team with machetes and local weapons, damaging the speedboat used in the drive. Preparations are under way to file a case against the detained fishermen.
