A 2.5 kg "king hilsa" has been caught at the mouth of the Baleshwar river in Barguna. On the morning of Friday 25 April it was sold for Tk 14,000 at an open auction at the Pathorghata BFDC market.

Locals said several local fishermen had gone fishing at the Baleshwar river mouth in Pathorghata at high tide. When they finished hauling in their net, they found the king hilsa in it. At about 8.30am they took it to the Mostafa Alam Fishing and Merchant wholesale shed at the Pathorghata BFDC market, where, at a rate of Tk 2,20,000 a maund, wholesaler Hanif Mia bought the fish at the open auction for Tk 13,750.

Hanif Mia told Jagonews: "This is the king hilsa of the river. Fish from the Baleshwar taste better than fish from other rivers. They look white and translucent. It is essentially a silver hilsa. I bought it at the highest bid for about Tk 14,000. We are getting ready to send it to Dhaka for sale, and I hope to get a good price."
