Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation has rescued a venomous banded krait in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar.

The snake was rescued on the evening of Saturday, 27 June, from the boundary net of the house of Sanjay Chakraborty, a resident of South Boulashi in Mirzapur union of the upazila.

Locals said family members panicked when they saw a snake caught in the boundary net that evening. The owner, Sanjay Chakraborty, then informed Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation. On receiving the news, the foundation's director Swapan Deb Sajal and environmental activist Rajdeep Deb Deep quickly reached the spot and identified the snake as a banded krait, known as one of Bangladesh's most venomous snakes.

The rescuers said that, judging by the snake's physical condition and the way it was tangled, it had probably been caught in the net for about a week, and it had become very weak. After about 20 minutes' effort, they carefully cut part of the net and freed the snake safely.

After the rescue, the snake was handed over to the range officer of the Sreemangal forest range office for observation. Sreemangal range officer Md Nazmul Islam confirmed this and said the snake would be released into the forest once it has recovered.
