The forest department has rescued a cub of an endangered bear species in a raid at Alikadam, Bandarban. The cub was recovered on Tuesday afternoon (25 November) from the Alikadam bazar area, under the Toin range of the Lama forest division.

According to local sources, the forest department raided the area on Tuesday afternoon after a tip-off that a bear cub was being kept beside Alikadam bazar to be trafficked. Sensing the raid, the traffickers abandoned the cub and fled, and the forest department recovered it.

Alikadam Toin range officer Ariful Islam said the forest department had received information that a black bear cub about three months old was being trafficked. The cub is 18 inches tall and 20 inches long and weighs 6 kg, and its age is estimated at about 8 months, he said.
