A baghair fish weighing 23 kg, caught in the Brahmaputra river in the Jatrapur area of Kurigram Sadar upazila, has been sold for Tk 24,200.

Fish trader Suman Mia cut up the fish and sold it retail at Tk 1,100 a kg, for Tk 24,200, at the Kurigram municipal market on Sunday afternoon (31 October).

According to local sources, fisherman Maidul Islam of the Jatrapur area cast his net in the Brahmaputra on Sunday morning and the 23 kg baghair was caught in it. Suman Mia, a fish trader of Kurigram district town, then bought it at an open auction in the Jatrapur bazar area at Tk 800 a kg, for Tk 18,400 in total. He later cut it up and sold it retail at Tk 1,100 a kg for Tk 24,200.

Suman told Banglanews that baghair of various weights are now often caught in fishermen's nets in the Brahmaputra. "Because there is demand for this fish in the market, I often buy fish from different ghats, cut them and sell them retail," he said.

Confirming the matter, Kurigram district fisheries officer Kalipada Roy told Banglanews that large fish are now regularly being caught in different parts of the Brahmaputra. Both fishermen and traders are happy and benefiting financially, he said.
