Bagda shrimp (prawn) are ten-legged animals of the shrimp family. Worldwide there are 540 species of bagda shrimp in seven families. They grow up to 330 millimetres, or 13 inches, and weigh up to 450 grams, or 1 pound. Prepared by standard recipes, they are widely known as a valuable food species. Shrimp live in open waters as their natural habitat, but they are also produced on farms for commercial cultivation.

Bagda shrimp is a familiar fish in Bangladesh, as tasty as it is attractive to look at. Shrimp exports now earn a great deal of foreign currency. Almost everyone in the country, young and old, loves it, and if you wish you can farm bagda shrimp in a tank at home.

• This is because the temperature is moderate at those times. Otherwise the fish may die.
