The Bangladesh Army's tree-planting drive 2021 has begun under the slogan "Plant trees in Mujib Year, sow the dream of Golden Bengal".

Army chief General S M Shafiuddin Ahmed inaugurated the programme on Thursday, 8 July.

To mark the occasion, the army chief planted an ornamental Cassia javanica sapling in the Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Line area of Dhaka Cantonment. With this, the programme was launched simultaneously by video teleconference (VTC) at Dhaka Cantonment and all other cantonments, the DOHS areas and the Jolshiri project.

Until 15 August, the drive will plant fruit, timber and medicinal species as well as various ornamental trees. It will be carried out in all cantonments, in training areas and firing ranges including Swarnadwip, in the DOHS areas and in the Jolshiri housing project.

This year the Bangladesh Army will plant about two lakh trees. The aim of the programme is to increase the country's forest resources and protect the environmental balance, and to encourage everyone to plant trees of their own accord, giving special meaning to the auspicious occasion of the golden jubilee of independence and the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation.
