The upazila administration and fisheries office in Araihazar, Narayanganj, seized 50,000 metres of current net and about 8 kg of hilsa in a joint drive.

The drive was carried out on Monday afternoon (13 October) on the bank of the Meghna at Chaitankanda and Dayakanda in the upazila. The seized nets were then burned in public and the hilsa distributed to a local orphanage.

Senior upazila fisheries officer Jesmin Akter led the drive. Fisheries extension officer Aminul Islam and other officials of the fisheries office were present.

Jesmin Akter said the drives to protect mother hilsa would continue, and action is being taken regularly against people using illegal nets in the river.
