About 1,200 kg of hilsa has been exported to India through the Akhaura land port in Brahmanbaria. At about 2:45pm on Thursday (18 September), two pickups loaded with hilsa entered the Agartala land port in the first consignment for Durga Puja.

Mohatab and Sons, an exporter from Benapole in Jashore, exported the fish at $12.5 a kilogram. The importer is M/s Paritosh Biswas of Agartala in India's Tripura state. Customs clearing was handled by M/s Sakiat Construction, a C&F agent at Akhaura land port.

Faruk Mia, owner of M/s Sakiat Construction, said approval had been given to export 90 tonnes of hilsa through Akhaura land port via three firms. The first consignment carried 1,192 kg. Hilsa will be exported to India until the day before Durga Puja begins, but because of the shortage of hilsa in the market, the full approved amount will not be exported, he said.
