Another elephant calf has been found dead in West Midnapore district of West Bengal, India. On Wednesday afternoon residents of Chandabila village, in the Kiyamacha beat of the Nayabasat range, saw the body floating in the Kubai river and informed the forest department.
The body was badly decomposed and the cause of death is not yet known; the forest department has begun an inquiry. An official of the Nayabasat range said they suspect the calf died elsewhere a few days earlier and was carried down by the river.
Just four days earlier, on Sunday, the bodies of three elephants, two of them calves, were found in a paddy field in Harbhanga village under Salboni police station. They were reported to have been electrocuted. It is alleged that a shallow pump was being run in the field on an illegal power connection, which electrocuted the elephants.
The pump's owner has been arrested, Ei Samay reported.
