Every year some of the world's natural wonders and important structures are given special status for their significance.

This time UNESCO's World Heritage Committee held its 43rd session in Baku, Azerbaijan, where it decided which new places would be given this special status. Here are some of the new sites and landmarks added to the World Heritage list.

Vatnajokull National Park covers 14 per cent of Iceland's total area. Covered in ice and marked by volcanic features, the whole region is strikingly beautiful, with large areas of cooled lava flows.

Another addition is a region made up of many islands, home to more birds and marine mammals than anywhere else in the world. Visitors there can see the rare king penguin.
